Responding to the poll released by Best for Britain, indicating that two-thirds of the public support an extension to the transition period (including 49% of Leave voters) - Layla Moran has called on the Government to listen to the public in order to avoid an economically devastating No Deal Brexit.
Lib Dem MP Layla Moran commented:
“If the Government do not extend the transition period, our country will once again face the threat of an economically devastating No Deal Brexit, and all the uncertainty and stress that comes with it.
“Over the last two years, vital time and resources were diverted from preparing for a pandemic to planning for a No Deal. The Government cannot afford to make the same mistake again, when people’s lives and livelihoods are on the line. The coronavirus response must come first.
“A Government source cited having to pay into the EU Coronavirus Scheme as a reason not to extend the transition. But this is an excuse; the Government could attempt to make an agreement with the EU to extend the transition period whilst neither contributing nor drawing down on that scheme.
“Now is the time to put people’s lives and businesses before Brexit. The pragmatic and sensible approach is for the Government to listen to the public and extend the transition period until the UK economy has weathered the storm caused by coronavirus."
